Aydın AKAN graduated from Uludağ University, Department of Electrical Engineering, in 1984 and Istanbul Technical University, Electronics and Communication Program in 1991. In his master’s thesis, he worked on a real-time adaptive noise cancellation system for biological signals. In 1988, he moved to Istanbul University and started his PhD studies in signal processing at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, in March 1992. His Ph.D. thesis was on “Time-Frequency Analysis with Gabor Expansions” and he completed his Ph.D. studies in April 1996. In December 1996, he was appointed assistant professor at the Department of Electronics, Department of Electronic Engineering, I.U.. In November 2000, he was promoted to Associate Professor at Signal Processing field on the Department of Telecommunications, Department of Signal Processing. On May 2, 2001, he was promoted to associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and on October 31, 2006, he was appointed as professor.
On March 20, 2017, he was appointed professor at Izmir Katip Çelebi University, Department of Biomedical Engineering. He continued his teaching and research activities in this department as the head of the department and director of Biomedical Testing, Calibration Application and Research Centre until January 31, 2020. He is currently working as a professor at Izmir University of Economics, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Prof. Dr. Aydın Akan continues his academic studies on time-frequency analysis for non-stationary signals and application of time-frequency analysis methods to problems in communication and biomedical engineering.
Prof. Dr. Aydın AKAN has worked as an executive and researcher in many projects supported by TÜBİTAK and Scientific Research Projects. His books, articles, book chapters and papers on his research have been published in domestic and foreing. He is a member of the review board of many scientific journals and in the advisory, management, organizational, technical program and review boards of scientific conferences.
Dr. Aydın AKAN is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) Signal Processing (SP) and Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMB) branches, a member of the European Signal Processing Association (EURASIP), Biomedical Signal and Image Analysis Technical Area Committee. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Digital Signal Processing, Elsevier.
Savaş Yıldırım completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in Computer Engineering at Istanbul Technical University. He later conducted his doctoral research in Natural Language Processing (NLP) at Trakya University. He has also conducted post-doctoral research at Eberhard Karls Tübingen University. Currently, he is a full-time faculty member (Associate Professor) at Istanbul Bilgi University and also serves as a visiting lecturer at Toronto Metropolitan University.
He is an active researcher and instructor with over 20 years of experience in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Natural Language Processing. He is a co-author of the NLP book "Mastering Transformers" published by Packt Publishing. He has made significant contributions to Turkish NLP by developing many open-source software and resources. He also provides consultancy on R&D projects to many companies in the field of artificial intelligence. Some of his projects are:
Currently, he is mostly conducting research on Advanced Feedforward Neural Networks, CNN, Transformers, BERT, T5, T0, GPT, and similar Large Language Models (LLM). He is also working on projects and research related to topics such as Few-Shot Learning, Active Learning, Efficiency in LLM, Explainable AI (XAI), and more.
